South and southeast of Bismarck, the Lincoln–Fort Rice area is the biggest rural pocket in Burleigh County, home to roughly 4,500 people.

North of Bismarck, Hay Creek Township has about 4,380 residents on acreage and subdivision lots.

East and southeast of Bismarck, Apple Creek Township had about 3,500 residents in the 2025 estimates.

East of Bismarck toward Menoken, Gibbs Township is home to about 2,860 residents.

North of Bismarck along the Missouri River bottom, the Burnt Creek–Riverview area had about 2,600 residents in 2025.

Around Mandan and toward St. Anthony, East Morton has about 3,200 residents and the Mandan edge area another 2,200 outside city limits.

West of Mandan, small towns such as New Salem, Hebron and Glen Ullin are surrounded by farms on septic.
